Light Rail
Our
international experiences with light rail, most particularly in Europe, have
enabled us to grow this mode of transportation in North America. This
revolutionary way of transporting passengers relies on light, diesel powered
vehicles (or electric powered vehicles) and it provides another transportation
solution for our clients.
Sprinter – Opening 31 December 2007 in California
Sprinter is a new diesel-powered light rail service between Oceanside and
Escondido, California.
Supporting
California’s need to reduce the number of cars on the road, and by recycling
“old” resources, the Sprinter light rail project is converting an existing
22-mile freight rail branch line into a passenger light rail system. The
Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) freight rail service will continue to run
within restricted nighttime hours. The project also includes the construction
of 1.7 miles of new track that will loop into the California State University
campus at San Marcos.
The Sprinter service will consist of one-car trains operating on 30-minute
headways in both directions, over an eighteen-hour period daily serving 15
passenger stations.

Light Rail Transit is a key component to a balanced
integrated public transportation system. Sprinter Light Rail will be able to
transport high volumes of people without adding lanes to highways. Light rail
is a fast and safe way to travel, connecting neighborhoods, schools,
businesses, and recreation areas east/west from Escondido to Oceanside.
