Ecoliner Electric Bus Is Cutting Edge Technology With Sleek LookFoothill Transit we have three innovative electric buses in operation and nine more on order. The Foothill Transit team in the greater Los Angeles area officially unveiled the world's first heavy-duty, fast charging electric bus - The Ecoliner - at its Pomona Operations Yard. The Ecoliner electric bus is a technological marvel that may make truly zero emissions technology a reality in heavy duty service. The lightweight buses have futuristic styling and a lightweight composite construction. The in-route docking station for the electric buses can deliver an impressive 95% recharge in less than 10 minutes and will require no intervention or hands-on labor from the bus operator.
This fast charge, in-route electric powered Ecoliner bus project is the first of its kind in the nation. No other electric bus in service in the U.S. currently has this kind of technology. Although electric buses have been around for some time they could travel 30 miles but then had to be taken out of service to charge. During the project's life, both Foothill Transit and the bus manufacturer, Proterra, will be monitoring the technology's ability to handle the demands of a regular, stop-and-go transit route. The first three Ecoliner buses in service are receiving positive reviews. Additionally, the West Covina team was also awarded the largest share (in the nation) of the TIGGER II grants—$10M—for this innovative bus project. The money will go toward purchasing nine more Ecoliner vehicles, which will enable Foothill Transit to complete the electrification of the agency's and the region's first all-electric bus route.
