“The Deuce” – Mobility with a Las Vegas Attitude

The Las Vegas “Strip”, famous for many history-making firsts, welcomes more than 37 million visitors each year. Most of the tourism activity is concentrated in an 8-mile resort corridor of hotels, restaurants and casinos. The “Strip's" round the clock activity generates heavy volumes of pedestrian and auto traffic, and an extremely congested environment.

In 2005, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) took action to address the congestion and created another Las Vegas first with the launch of “The Deuce.” These high capacity, 14 –foot high double-decker vehicles go up and down the “Strip”, providing convenient, safe service to people enjoying the city, casinos and restaurants. Passengers can get on and off along the “Strip”, which enables them to easily go from casino to casino. It also stops at the Las Vegas Discount Mall. The Deuce buses are branded with eye-catching graphics and typically have a fun atmosphere among passengers. In the first year of service using the Deuce, ridership increased 51% over the prior bus service.

The Deuce service operates twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week. In peak periods, 30 in-service vehicles are scheduled, with as low as seven minute waits in peak hours. The popular Deuce service carries approximately one million passengers per month making it the busiest route in the Las Vegas valley.

In June 2008, the RTC enhanced the Deuce system, purchasing new vehicles with several new features that provide a more comfortable and efficient ride. This newer vehicle has two staircases, which enable quicker boarding and de-boarding. Video panels provide? passengers with stop information. ?Wider entranceways provide easier access, especially for mobility devices like wheel chairs. Air conditioning units are larger, which is key in the Las Vegas climate.

The entire RTC network is one of the most efficient bus networks in the country, transporting some 45 passengers per service hour, which is nearly twice the national average. The Deuce’s performance is even more impressive, with 70 passengers per service hour, which is nearly 2.5 times higher than the U.S. average. Veolia Transportation is very proud to be the partner of the RTC of Las Vegas in providing its city-wide bus service. We have created innovative ways to manage the maintenance of this large network, which has to function 24/7 in the demanding environment of Las Vegas. We have executed one of the most comprehensive safety programs in the industry and have admirable on-time performance statistics.
