Efficient Public Transit for a High Growth City

The Greater Phoenix area is a fast-growing region with 4 million inhabitants and a sunny, pleasant climate that attracts people from all over the world. Several different communities and transit authorities provide mobility to residents under the brand name Valley Metro.

Veolia Transportation operates multiple contracts in the area, operating a management contract for the City of Phoenix, and providing bus service and maintenance operations for the cities of Mesa and Tempe. Taken together, these three bus services transport over 62 million passengers each year. In addition, we operate a major contract at the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, where we provide passenger bus service to the rental car center and the consumer and employee parking lots. As the new commuter light rail system comes into service in early 2009, we will also provide bus service that is integrated with the new rail system, around the city and at the airport. Finally, Veolia Transportation also operates SuperShuttle, the leading airport shuttle service to and from the Phoenix airport, and ExecuCar, a private sedan service.

Because we have such a large base of business in Phoenix, we have been able to centralize key services such as training, accounting, purchasing and maintenance of alternative fuel vehicles there. In addition to our extensive ongoing safety training, we train all our Phoenix-area employees in customer care using our proprietary training program Going For Green?.

The facility we operate for our client in Tempe is a Leed-Certified building, and one of the most environmentally advanced transit operations in the country. The City of Phoenix has an ambitious plan for enhancing sustainability, and our efforts to build a truly green culture and reduce our carbon footprint align well with the city’s goals.

The long term vision for mobility in Phoenix envisions several key transit projects, including 28 miles of extensions to the new 30-mile light rail system, more frequent bus service across the region, enhanced modal integration, and new regional capital projects such as park-and-ride lots, transit centers and more sophisticated maintenance facilities.
