Initiatives that Build a Culture of Safety
Having a culture of world-class safety means that every Veolia employee has an important stake in, and a clear understanding of, the principles and practices of safety—whether they’re on the road or behind the desk.
To promote and support a world-class safety culture, we use a number of different programs and approaches. The program is being piloted in multiple locations to strengthen it for a broader rollout.
- D.R.I.V.E. This comprehensive transit program is employee-developed and management-supported. It is designed to sustain safe behaviors in the workplace. The program was developed in close collaboration with a leading global firm focused on safety and risk management programs. The DRIVE development team was made up of operators, mechanics, supervisors and trainers, ensuring that their input was fully incorporated. The acronym, DRIVE, stands for Dedication to safety, Understanding of Requirements, Awareness of Safety Instruction, Living our Values, and Operating Equipment Safely.
- “Million Milers” Program. In Las Vegas, we have a formal program for recognizing and honoring drivers who drive for one million miles without a preventable accident. There are also honors for 500,000 miles, 750,000 miles, and even two and three million miles. We are expanding this program to extend across the country.
In addition to these programs, employees receive employee newsletters that champion the safety accomplishments of our people across the country, and a quarterly magazine from the National Safety Council that helps keep important safety topics foremost in their mind.
