Building a Green Culture
Veolia is the only transportation company in the world owned by a major environmental company, Veolia Environnement. So it’s only natural that sustainability has been part of our corporate culture since the day we began operating our first bus.
The transit business is inherently sustainable. As a global, leading provider of public transit, we’re at the forefront of the effort to get people out of cars and into more efficient forms of mobility. We’re using innovative thinking and the latest in technology to make transit a viable and appealing option for more people—because every car that is parked instead of driven is a small victory for our planet.
Our commitment to the environment doesn’t end there. We’re working hard to make our offices and maintenance facilities models of sustainability. We’re investing in more fuel-efficient vehicles; training our operators to drive more efficiently to conserve fuel; testing new and improved alternative fuels, and using recycled and planet-friendly office products.
We strive to reduce carbon gas emissions through strong maintenance practices (engine tune-ups, re-flashing, particulate traps, etc.), alternative fuels, approved modification, and/or replacement of old fleets, engines, and exhaust systems, and more. We are also changing our company-owned vehicles to hybrids or highly fuel efficient models.
Embedding Sustainable Practices Into Our Behaviors
We are committed to creating a true culture of sustainability in all of our practices, going well beyond our Environmental Management System. Our philosophy and message to our people is, “Do what you are already doing, but do it in as ‘green’ a way as possible.”
We have specified the desired behaviors and created detailed checklists associated with each of our three areas of concentration: offices, facilities and vehicles. We have declared activities and behaviors that are required and ones that are optional for each area explained below. Plus we have created a major internal communications campaign to educate and motivate our people to “green” their actions.
“Greening” our Offices
We are committed to taking aggressive steps towards “greening” our offices. Too often, environmental impact is thought to be a concern only of the maintenance shop. In reality, there are many things that can be done, and are being implemented in all our Veolia Transportation locations. From banning plastic bottles of water and Styrofoam cups to printing and copying on both sides of each sheet of paper, to keeping computer monitors in “sleep” mode when they aren’t being used, we know that our collective environmental impact at over 100 locations in the US and Canada is significant. We are also taking action to minimize waste, recycle, and conserve energy and water as we consider the environmental impact of all our office-based decisions.
“Greening” our Facilities
We are committed to take bold steps toward “greening” our maintenance shops and facilities. We strive to conserve energy, water and waste regardless of who pays the bills for these items, us or our clients. We consider the environmental impact of every decision that we make at our facilities, from the chemicals we use to clean with in the shops to the way we control our waste streams and consume water. We have provided extensive checklists to all our facilities so they can initiate and maintain sustainable behaviors in our maintenance shops and facilities.
“Greening” our Vehicles
We are also taking many steps toward “greening” our vehicles. This includes a strong emphasis on regular and preventative maintenance, minimizing idling, enforcing “green driving,” and dealing carefully and effectively with all solvents, paints and chemicals. Greening our vehicles also includes recycling oil and oil filters, and placing a major emphasis on fuel efficiency.
In sum, our goal is to build a culture where green behaviors are the “norm.” Veolia Transportation has over 150 contracts in the U.S and Canada, and we understand that this gives us the ability to make a major positive impact on the environment through our sustainability efforts.
