Veolia’s Veloway subsidiary is at the leading edge of an exciting new trend in urban transit: shared bicycle programs. The concept of shared bikes is simple: customers rent a bike from a station or “pod,” ride to their destination, and drop the bike off at another pod. Pods are plentiful and strategically located, so there’s always one near a rider’s destination. Renting is easy and self-serve: customers use a SmartCard or mobile phone to quickly check out and return their bike.

Urban bike sharing is already popular in European cities like Paris, London and Barcelona. In Paris alone, over 20,000 bikes are rented from over 1,400 pods – up to 40 people may use one bicycle in a single day! And now bike sharing is coming to North American cities like Washington, DC, Chicago, Seattle and Toronto.
